SASEC's Finance Ministers Meeting held in New Delhi
i. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley chaired the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Finance Ministers meeting in New Delhi.
ii. It was attended by the seven Finance Ministers from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka and the Asian Development Bank as a supporting SASEC in this endeavor.
iii. Myanmar has joined the SASEC program as its seventh member.

National conference on Communicating India to be organized
i. A day-long national conference on Communicating India will be organized in New Delhi which will be inaugurated by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore.
ii. Telling the India's story to the world, Communicating via Journalism and Dialogue with Diaspora are three main themes which are outlined for the conference.

Jhargram becomes 22nd Bengal district
i. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared Jhargram as the 22nd district of West Bengal.
ii. Jhargram has been formed by bifurcating West Midnapore, which has a population of more than 11.37 lakh. Mamta Banerjee announced a budget of Rs 200 crore for the development of Jhargram.


Rs 40,000 crore expressway project in northeast announced
i. The first express highway project in the northeast region will be developed along the Brahmaputra river in Assam at an estimated investment of Rs 40,000 crore inaugurated by Union Road Minister Nitin Gadkari.
ii. The agreement was signed by the Assam government, the National Highways Authority of India and the Inland Waterways of India.

BS-IV Grade Fuel launched by Central Government after BS-III ban
i. Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum and Natural Gas officially launched the low emission Bharat stage (BS)-IV Grade fuel in Bhubaneswar.
ii. The launch was made on the special occasion of Utkal Diwas which is the foundation day of Odisha.
iii. The launch was made in 12 cities of India. They were Varanasi, Vijayawada, Durgapur, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Bhopal, Ranchi, Madurai, Nagpur, Patna, Guwahati and Shillong.

ICICI, Axis Bank sell Rs 1800 crore Ballarpur loans to Edelweiss
i. ICICI Bank and Axis Bank sold Rs.1,800 crore of loans to paper maker Ballarpur Industries Ltd to Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company.
ii. It is the first time that loans have been sold to an asset reconstruction firm. Axis Bank sold loans of Rs.1,200 crore and ICICI Bank sold loans of Rs.600 crore. 

Geetha Johri- Gujarat's first woman Police Chief
i. A 1982 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) Geetha Johri has been appointed as the first woman Director General of Police (DGP) of Gujarat.
ii. She has replaced P P Pandey, who resigned recently. Johri is posted at the State Police Housing Corporation in Gandhinagar.


Amazon.in launches ‘Classroom’ for new sellers
i. To make on-boarding easy for new sellers, Amazon India has launched an initiative called 'Amazon Classroom', a virtual training program to help teach them the nuances of online selling.
ii. The program focusses on areas such as order processing, adding products and managing returns that are required to operate a successful online business.

 Gionee India ties up with RCB for IPL 10
i. Handset maker Gionee India announced its association with the ‘Royal Challengers Bangalore’, as their presenting sponsors for the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
ii. Gionee is already the principal sponsor of the Kolkata Franchise — ‘Kolkata Knight Riders’. Gionee has become the first brand ever to sponsor front jerseys of two IPL teams in the same edition and will have its logo feature on the front jersey of both the teams.
iii. The smartphone manufacturer had signed Captain Virat Kohli as its brand ambassador in November 2016.

Berhampur Thakurani Yatra fetival begins in Odisha
i. The famous Berhampur Thakurani Yatra, one of the biggest festivals of southern Odisha, has been celebrated with pomp and gaiety.
ii. Nearly a month-long festival celebrates the journey of the deity Maa Budhi Thakurani. 



 WTO sets up panel to resolve steel dispute with India, Japan
i. The WTO’s dispute settlement set up a panel to resolve the dispute between Japan and India over imposition of safeguard import duty on iron and steel products.
ii. Japan in December 2016 dragged India to the WTO against certain measures taken by New Delhi on imports of iron and steel products.
iii. Japan, which is the second largest steel producer in the world, had alleged that duties imposed on steel imports by India violates WTO trade norms.

Indian Cricketer MS Dhoni named CEO of Gulf Oil for 1 day
i. The former Indian cricket team skipper MS Dhoni became an acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gulf Oil India just for a day.
ii. He took charge of Gulf Oil India at the Mumbai head office. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was also named as the brand ambassador for Gulf Oil in the year 2011.

1. पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने एक कार्यक्रम में संयुक्त राष्ट्र शरणार्थी एजेंसी (यूएनएचसीआर) को 2015 के लिए ‘इंदिरा गांधी शांति, निरस्त्रीकरण एवं विकास पुरस्कार’ प्रदान किया।

1. Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana comes into effect today

  • Today, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) comes into effect and continue till 31st March 2017.
  • Declaration of undisclosed income under it can be made by any person in the form of cash or deposits in an account with bank or post office.
  • The PMKGY provides for 50%  tax and surcharge on declarations of unaccounted cash deposited in banks.
  • The money generated from disclosure of unaccounted cash will be used for this yojana and will be kept confidential.

2. India's foreign exchange reserves down by USD 887.2 mn to USD 362.987 bn


  • Foreign exchange reserves of India has declined by 887.2 million dollars to 362.987 billion dollars in the week ended this month.
  • Gold reserves remained steady at 19.982 billion dollars.
  • India's special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) decreased by 5.4 million dollars to 1.438 billion dollars.
  • The country's reserve position also dipped by 8.8 million dollars to 2.307 billion dollars.
Note:
  • Foreign exchange reserves are reserve assets held by a central bank in foreign currencies, used to back liabilities on their own issued currency as well as to influence monetary policy.

3. Pimpri Budruk in Pune district declared cashless village


  • The Centre for Good Governance has declared that Pimpri Budruk in Pune district as a cashless village.
  • Each of the eligible members (students to senior citizens) of the village Pimpari Budruk from Khed tahasil of Pune District has an account with the bank and every transaction is being done through mobile banking.
  • All the villagers have been trained by the bank officials and volunteers of Centre for Good Governance.

4. NTPC signs MoU with NALCO to set up power plant in Odisha


  • National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd. and National Aluminium Company (NALCO) have jointly agreed to set up a cola based 2400 MW power plant at Gajmara in Dhenkanal district.
  • The energy produced at this unit will be used to supply power to Nalco's aluminium smelter.
  • The estimated investment in all these projects will be approximately Rs. 36,000 crores.

5. Rajasthan launches meal scheme 'Annapurna Rasoi'


  • Rajasthan government has launched a subsidised meal scheme ‘Annapurna Rasoi'.
  • As per the scheme, the poor and the needy will get breakfast for Rs. 5 and lunch or dinner for Rs 8.
  • Initially, the scheme has been launched in 12 cities Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Ajmer, Bikaner, Udaipur, Bharatpur, Baran, Banswara, Dungarpur, Jhalawar and Pratapgarh.

6. The Union Govt to deploy 600 young professionals to boost Swachh Bharat


  • The Union Government will deploy 600 (One in each district) Zila Swachh Bharat Preraks (ZSBPs) across the country to boost Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
  • The role of the ZSBPs will be to support (technical and management) to the Collector/DDO/CEO to implement Swachh Bharat Mission by coordinating the various sanitation-related activities in the district.
  • The cadre will be funded and recruited by the Tata Trusts.

8. UN extends peacekeeping mission in South Sudan


  • United Nations Security Council has extended the mandate of its peacekeeping mission in South Sudan till December 2017.
  • The mission will include a new regional force of 4,000 troops.

  • South Sudan has suffered ethnic violence and has been in a civil war since 2013
  • As of 2016, it has the second highest score on the Fragile States Index.

  • Earlier, Indian defence Lachlan Sharp conceded a soft goal in the 57th minute to take the match into shoot-out after both the teams were locked at 2-2 at the end of regulation time.

Historical Facts about Punjab

    Indian Punjab state came to existence after independence on 15 Aug 1947. Punjab in its present form was created on 31 Oct 1966 after separation of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana.
    The sikh faith came into light in Punjab region during 15 and 16 century. Guru Nanak founded new religion followed by 9 Gurus.
    Guru Ram das laid the foundation of present city amritsar.
    Guru Arjun Dev compiled the Adi Granth. His son Guru Har Gobind trained his followers in military art.
    The Sikh Empire (1801 – 1849) was formed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.


Geographical Facts about Punjab

    Punjab borders with 4 states – Jammu and Kasmir in north, Himachal pradesh in northeast, Haryana in south and Rajasthan in Southwest.
    The land is highly fertile as it is watered by Indus, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej and Ghaggar (Literal meaning of punjab is 5 rivers).
    The word punjab is made of two words- “punj” means five and “ab” means water.
    Amritsar district of Punjab is largest in terms of both area and population.


Social and Cultural Facts about Punjab

    The holiest of Sikh shrines, Harminder sahib (Golden Temple) is in the city of Amritsar. The city of Amritsar was founded by fourth Sikh Guru Ram Das and this temple was designed by fifth Guru Arjan. The temple in its present form was rebuilt by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia in 1764. Gold cover was installed above the gurudwara by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
    Of the five Takhts of Sikhism, three are in Punjab – Sri Akal Thakt Sahib, Damdama Sahib and Anandpur Sahib.
    Bhangra and Giddha are traditional dance forms of the state to celebrate the harvest season of Lohri.
    Amritsar is one of the major tourist destinations of not only punjab but India attracting more visitors than Taj Mahal.

    Sabeer Bhatia – who is the founder of Hot Mail, graduated from BITS Pilani and was born in Chandigarh.
    Naresh Goyal – the chairman of Jet Airways was born in Sangrur of Punjab in 1949.
    Amrita Sher Gil – is a famous painter who was born in Budapest (Hungary) to Punjabi Sikh father. She is also known as most expensive woman painter of India.
    Har Govind Khurana – was the scientist who received Nobel Prize in year 1968. He later became citizen of US. He was born in Raipur of Punjab (present Punjab region of Pakistan).
    Dharmendra – the famous hindi films actor was born in Ludhiana district of Punjab.
    Jeetendra – the famous charming hindi film actor whose real name is Ravi Kapoor was born in Amritsar.
